Do Phones affect Male Fertility?
Smart Phones and Male Fertility
We love our smart phones. We spend so long on them and we use them almost every day. It is definitely a fun and useful device to have around, but have we considered the effects that smart phones have on our health. Previously, there were a lot of concerns about the link of cancer and the use of smart phones. Although there has not yet been conclusive evidence about the link of cancer and smart phones, there are other health issues that are of concern to you.
Why do smart phones cause health issues? The answer is because of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) that is emitted from the mobile phones. A lot of electronic devices like TVs, Laptops, Fridges, and Microwaves also release low levels of EMR but we hardly spend a lot of time using these devices in close proximity, cell phones are a completely different matter altogether. The main health concern of using smart phones is the loss of fertility or fertility issues, especially in men.
Smartphone effect on Male Fertility:
- Lowered Sperm Count: A study has shown that heavy usage of smart phones tends to cause a loss of sperm count in men.
The study reported that:
“…in the most striking findings, men who carried their phones in a pocket of on the belt were more likely to have lower sperm counts and/or more inactive or less mobile sperm.”
- Lower Sperm Motility: Sperms have to travel through a hostile environment to reach the egg in order to fertilize it. Spermatozoa are called swimmers for a reason and smart phone use tends to reduce the mobility of the sperm. Exposure to cell phone radiation to sperm has been known to affect sperm DNA and their morphology, which are significant defects in their appearance.
- Higher Effect of radiation on male fertility due to proximity of radiation: Males tend to have a higher risk of fertility issues due to the use of cell phones. This is because of the proximity of cell phones to their genital region. Most men tend to keep their cell phones in their side pockets which increases the chances of loss of fertility in men.
Tips For Better Male Fertility
- Keep Phone in Bag instead of pockets: Instead of keeping your phones in your pockets, you should consider keeping your phones in your bags. Even moving the location of your phone to your back pocket will have a better effect on both sperm count and mobility.
- When talking on your phone: If you use a blue tooth headset while conversing on your phone, make sure to keep your phone at a distance from your body. Don’t keep your phone in your pockets. People tend to have longer conversations while on their Bluetooth headsets so keeping the phone in your pockets will only make matters worse.
- Don’t use excessively: This is an age old adage, too much of a good thing can be harmful for you. No doubt cell phones are a useful tool but they need to be used with caution. Try and avoid spending hours on your phone. It may be fun to play those games and enjoy watching those youtube videos or spending hours chatting with your friends, but you need to do so with care.
