Parenthood is the best stage of the lives of a couple or individuals. Unfortunately for most people, it doesn’t come that easy due to some health factors such as infertility, age and other conditions of the reproductive system. In a bid to overcome all of these issues of the reproductive system that may not allow conception to occur, in 1978 Sir Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe invented the IVF treatment, a procedure that seeks to ensure successful conception, pregnancy and eventually, the birth of a healthy baby.
What is IVF?
IVF stands for In-Vitro Fertilization, which is a kind of assisted reproductive technology meant to help couples and individuals who may otherwise not be able to have babies, to conceive successfully. The IVF treatment process involves a manual combination of an egg and sperm in the lab, and then transferring the embryo into the uterus for implantation. This procedure has thus led to the famous name given to children conceived using IVF, “test-tube babies.”
When performing the IVF Treatment Process, five steps should be followed
- Proper selection of the couple ,
- Right stimulation protocol ,
- Successful collection of eggs and sperms,
- Fertilization
- And finally implantation for the successful pregnancy as explained below.
Proper selection of the couple
There are a variety of IVF procedures like ICSI, egg donor cycle, embryo donor cycle, TESA/PESA. In view of this, the right treatment procedure should be chosen for the couple to maximize their success rates.
Right stimulation protocol
Commonly referred to as Fertility medication, this is prescribed for the woman, to stimulate the development of follicles in the ovary. During this period, the hormone dosage is monitored by regular transvaginal ultrasound and if needed certain hormone tests.
Collection of eggs
Since fertilization of the eggs is done outside the womb, they will need to be retrieved from the ovary through a minor surgical process. With the help of ultrasound imaging, a hollow needle is guided through the pelvic cavity to retrieve the eggs .
Collection of sperms
The male is then required to produce a sample of sperm. If the male is not having sperms and he is not producing them in his testis also, then there is the option to consider a sperm donor. In cases where man is producing sperms but they are not there in the semen sample then the sperm of the partner is collected by various methods like TESA/ PESA so that the couple can have their own sperms. This will then be used to fertilize the eggs.
Fertilization
This process is done by embryologists in the Test tube Baby lab wherein the eggs so collected are fertilized with the sperms provided by husband / donor.
Transfer of embryos into the uterus
Transfer of the fertilized eggs is done 2 to 5 days after fertilization. It involves using a fine catheter to guide the embryos into the uterus, which may then get implanted in approximately 10-12 days.
Luteal phase support
Tablets, injections and vaginal progesterone preparations are prescribed to increase the chances of successful implantation of the embryos from the day of egg pick up. Blood test is done after 12-13 days to know the result of the IVF procedure.
Whom will it benefit?
In-Vitro Fertilization has been proven to be the best technological discovery for people who previously, couldn’t dream of having children. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone who can’t conceive is infertile, there are other conditions that could cause inability to conceive or sustain a pregnancy. The following is a list of people who benefit from IVF treatment.
- Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Older patients and those with low ovarian reserve
- Men suffering from infertility or low sperm count/motility
- Men suffering from absent sperm count but have sperms in testis
- Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (POS)
- Women with Endometriosis
- Women suffering from Premature Ovarian Failure
- Unexplained infertility
Even with the above-listed conditions of the reproductive system, with IVF Treatment, we ensure that our patient uses their own eggs and their partner’s sperms unless in the case of complete infertility, where they may be advised to use donor sperms or eggs.
Cautious when comparing clinic
It has always been challenging for women and couples to choose the perfect clinic to have their IVF Treatment. This is because IVF is a sensitive and expensive procedure, and if done by a less skilled/experienced doctor, it may turn out totally unsuccessful. This thus calls for great caution when comparing clinics. Thorough research should be done prior to visiting the fertility clinic for the IVF Treatment Process, and it is especially important if you seek the approval of someone who has undergone this procedure successfully at that particular clinic.
