What is CTG?
CTG or Cardiotocography is a technical means of recording the fetal heartbeat and the uterine contraction during pregnancy. It is a test that is usually done in the third trimester of the pregnancy to ensure that the baby’s heart beat is normal. Usually a fetal heart rate will range anywhere between 110 and 160 beats per minute. It will lower or increase depending on its movement in the womb. An increasing heart rate during movement is a good sign that the baby is receiving adequate oxygen from the placenta. A Cardiotocograph or Electronic Fetal monitor is used to measure the fetal heart rate. A CTG is a good way of understanding if the foetus is developing normally in the womb and its practical application are wide.
Why CTG is important in today’s environment?
Due to the hectic life style and fast paced environment that we live in CTG is an added layer of protection to ensure a smooth delivery. A CTG is done to ensure that the fetal heartbeat is regular. If the doctor finds an abnormality in the fetal heart rate then it could be a cause for concern. A CTG is performed in the third trimester to record the non stress test heart rate of the foetus. The mother will have to go through a CTG if:
- There is a low level of amniotic fluid
- You suffer from diabetes or hypertension
- The doctor suspects low level of oxygen in your placenta
