Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Day
Even though India is a land that introduced the Kamasutra to the world, due to societal changes in the last century or more, India has become very prudish. Conversations about sex, menstruation, pregnancies and STD’s are not as open as they need to be. Considering India has a population of about 1.5 billion it is very important for us to be able to freely raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health.
Conversations about sexual and reproductive health awareness go a lot beyond sex. Every year on February 12th India celebrates the sexual and reproductive health awareness day.
Why Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Is Important?
The sexual and reproductive health awareness day is an opportunity to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health issues as well as the transmission of sexual diseases. Events are held across the country in order to educate the general population about sexual diseases. An effort is made to provide proper guidance to youngsters and teens to discuss health issues, and inform them about the precautionary steps needed to be taken to improve quality of life.
Since sexual health is a very broad topic there is quite a bit of a challenge to ensure that the proper information is disbursed to the public. Issues such as sexual health, pleasure, diseases including (HIV/AIDs, STI’s) , genital mutilation, sexual dysfunction and even issues related to mental health should be discussed openly.
The National Population Stabilization Fund (Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh) has also started a toll free helpline (1800-11-6555) where individuals can call and discuss all their concerns in a private and confidential manner. If counselling is required then there is provision of that as well over the phone. If you would like to know additional information about sexual diseases and other reproduction related concerns you can always get in touch with the helplines, or speak to a trusted local gynaecologist or fertility specialist near you.
Awareness Initiatives by Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande

What To Do If You May Have A Reproductive Health Issue ?
In case you are suffering from a sexual or reproductive health issue the first thing to do is to understand that it is okay and that you can always seek help. If you know of any local doctors you trust do not hesitate to seek advice from them. If you are not sure about whom to visit, visit to your local physician can be the first step towards understanding your problems and finding a solution for the same.
It is important to understand that there is a lot of stigma associated with sexual and reproductive health issues in India. What is of further note is that when it comes to your health the stigma needs to be ignored. If you are not comfortable visiting a doctor perhaps giving a call on the helpline number mentioned above can be the first step towards seeking help.
