MENSURATION DISORDERS IN TEENAGE
Menstruation (a period) is a major stage of puberty in girls. It’s one of the many physical signs that a girl is turning into a woman.
Teenagers also suffer gynecological problems just like older women but they tend to get overlooked or not taken seriously by some.
Adolescence is the time when there is a sudden change in the body and numerous questions emerge in the minds of the teenagers. Firstly they are not able to cope with the changes and secondly the changes bring along problems with them. The most difficult issues are related to menses, in young girls. Physical changes during puberty can easily make adolescents feel awkward and unsure of themselves.
For any teenage girl, getting her first period is a physical milestone and a sign of becoming a woman. But it can be confusing and scary also if a certain problem arises. Some of the most common of the menstrual disorders are premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrheal and amenorrhea.
Common Menstrual Problems
- Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
It’s normal for women to feel a couple of side effects, for example, gentle swelling or breast soreness, before a period. However, ladies with PMS have a wave of emotional and physical symptoms that begin in the second half of the menstrual cycle and end after a period starts.
PMS includes many physical and emotional symptoms, such as:
- Acne
- Bloating
- Backaches
- Sore Breasts
- Headaches
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Food Cravings
- Depression Or Feeling Sad
- Irritability
- Anxiety
PMS is usually at its worst during the 4 days before a period. It has a tendency to vanish 2 to 3 days after the period starts. PMS can occur in any women of childbearing age. Not all women get PMS, and some exclusive get the worst symptoms when they are older or closer to menopause.
In spite of the fact that the correct reason for PMS is obscure, it appears to happen because of the changing hormone levels in the body and changing chemical levels in the brain. During the second half of the menstrual cycle, the amount of progesterone in the body increments. At that point, 7 days before the period starts, levels of both progesterone and estrogen begin to drop.
A few young women bodies appear to be more delicate to these hormone changes than others. Talk to your doctor if her symptoms are severe or interfere with her normal activities.
- Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhea is feeling intense menstrual pain and cramps. Depending on the severity, dysmenorrhea is expressed as primary dysmenorrhea or secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea side effects are felt from the beginning of the menstrual periods and are felt lifelong. Because of abnormal uterine contractions due to a chemical imbalance, serious menstrual cramping is experienced. Secondary dysmenorrhea begins in the later stages. The causes are diverse for primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Secondary dysmenorrhea can be blamed for medical conditions, for example, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory sickness, tumors, diseases, and abnormal pregnancy.
Symptoms of Dysmenorrhea:
- Severe cramping
- Occasional sharp pains in the lower abdomen, lower back and thighs
- Sweating
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Faintness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Amenorrhea
Amenorrhea is the condition in which the female skips her menses for more than three back to back menstrual cycles. Amenorrhea is also classified as primary amenorrhea and secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea happens from the beginning of menstrual periods. In this condition, the adolescent won’t get periods when she enters puberty. Secondary amenorrhea is where the periods become unpredictable from the time it had started.
Since pregnancy is the most common cause of secondary amenorrhea, a girl with skipped periods should have a pregnancy test. In addition to hormone imbalances and pregnancy, other things that can cause both primary and secondary amenorrhea include:
- Stress
- Significant Weight Loss Or Gain
- Anorexia (Amenorrhea Can Be A Sign That A Girl Is Losing Too Much Weight And May Have Anorexia)
- Stopping Birth Control Pills
- Thyroid Conditions
- Other Conditions That Can Affect Hormone Levels
