Different Menstrual Problems You May Experience In Your Lifetime
Menstruation is normal. Everyone is aware of that. But does everyone know what normal menstruation is? Unfortunately there is no one way to answer. So the best way to describe “normal” when it comes to a menstrual cycle is, to each her own. What I mean by this is, every woman will have a different normal menstrual cycle. Some may have excessively heavy flow on their first day and not so much on day 2, 3,4 or 5. Some may have flow only for 3 days instead of 5-7 which is considered “normal” to most. The relevant take away from this is that there is no one normal; one size fits all for all women. What’s important is that everyone should pay attention to their bodies and pay attention to see something that is out of ordinary for them.
Having said that, these are some common menstrual problems that you may face or have faced during your lifetime:
PreMenstrual Syndrome:
It is strange how often you hear the phrase “she must be PMS’ing” without really knowing anything about what it actually means to have Premenstrual syndrome. PMS can include a range of symptoms which can be both physical and emotional. The physical symptoms can include, breast soreness, headaches, bloated feeling, backaches, tummy aches, and so much more. The emotional issues can be much worse though. Symptoms can range from depression, irritability, anxiety, insomnia and many more. It really is a tough time for a woman. Rather than ridiculing the situation, men should focus on providing support and comfort during this time.
Heavy Periods:
Sometimes you could have a heavier flow than expected. This issue is called as menorrhagia. Menorrhagia causes you to bleed more than normal. A woman can lose up to 80 millilitres of blood during her period. It is much more than that in case she suffers from Menorrhagia. Another symptom of Menorrhagia is that the bleeding can last for more than 5-7 days which is considered the norm. If you have the symptoms of Menorrhagia we suggest pick up the phone and speak to your local gynaecologist who will be in a better position to tell you about your issues and guide you to a solution. Menorrhagia is usually caused due to an imbalance in your estrogenic and progesterone levels.
Heavy Bleeding during your period could also be because of the following reasons, puberty, vaginal infections, hypothyroidism or fibroids. If you notice something that is not the usual activity, get in touch with your specialist. It is better to be safe than sorry.
Absent Periods:
The most common cause of an absent period is pregnancy. But there could be several other reasons for which you could miss out on your period.
Amenorrhea is a medical condition due to which you can end up missing your period. It can be either caused due to an issue in the pituitary gland or a problem with the female reproductive system. Secondary Amenorrhea is when you don’t get your period for 6 months or more. It could happen because of:
Anorexia
Hyperthroidism
Ovarian Cysts’
Sudden Weight Changes
Pregnancy
Painful Periods:
Some women experience excruciating pain during their period. Also called dysmenorrhea, extremely painful menstruation is likely linked to an underlying medical problem, such as:
Endometriosis
Fibroids
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Just as a note, this is not the same as the pain and discomfort you feel during regular cramps which is just pain felt as your uterus is contracting.
Treating Menstrual Problems:
The treatment to menstrual problems depends on the causes of the issue. For minor issues, like cramps during PMS or small pain and discomfort the doctor is likely to prescribe medication to help you deal with the problem. If the case seems more severe then you will probably have to run some additional tests to get to the root of the problem to deal with it.
