Age and Fertility: How Your Biological Clock Affects Conception
When it comes to starting a family, age plays a crucial role in fertility for both men and women. While modern lifestyles, career priorities, and personal choices often lead couples to plan children later in life, it’s important to understand how your biological clock can impact your chances of conception.
At Shrikhande Fertility Clinic, we believe that awareness and timely medical guidance can make all the difference in achieving your dream of parenthood.
Understanding the Female Biological Clock
A woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have—around 1 to 2 million at birth. By puberty, this number drops to about 3 to 4 lakh, and with every menstrual cycle, a few hundred eggs are lost. Fertility peaks in the early 20s and begins to gradually decline after the age of 30.
By 35, the decline becomes more pronounced, and after 40, the chances of natural conception drop significantly.
This happens because both the quantity and quality of eggs decrease with age. Older eggs are more likely to have chromosomal abnormalities, which can lead to difficulties in conceiving or an increased risk of miscarriage.
However, many women in their late 30s and early 40s can still conceive with the right medical support and advanced fertility treatments available today.
Male Fertility and Age
While men produce sperm throughout their lives, age can still affect sperm quality. After 40, sperm motility (movement) and morphology (shape) often decline, which can affect the ability to fertilize an egg. Additionally, older paternal age has been linked to a slightly higher risk of certain genetic and developmental conditions in children. That said, men typically experience a slower decline in fertility compared to women, and many can conceive well into later years with healthy lifestyle choices and medical guidance.
