What Men Should Know about Conception
Male fertility is still a taboo topic in many parts of the world, as a result of which, there are a variety of myths about the male reproductive system and conception that are prevalent across the globe. One of these myths suggests that wearing tight pants can adversely impact male fertility while another states that daily intercourse can lead to reduced sperm count. There are also a large number of tips on how to increase one’s fertility. With so much information available online and the conflicting suggestions of those around you, it may become hard to segregate the truth from the bogus facts if you are planning a child and are looking for conception tips. Here are some of the myth busting facts that every man needs to know about male fertility and how to increase the chances of conception.
Production of semen happens on a regular basis
It is a lesser known fact that men continue to produce sperms throughout their life. The production of sperms is a continuous process that starts in the testes, with the help of the hormone Testosterone. However, it is critical to understand the difference between semen and sperm. The sperm count of your semen determines the actual chances of conception i.e. higher the sperm count, higher is the probability of conception. This sperm count may keep fluctuating throughout your lifetime based on various factors such as fitness levels and lifestyle. As per the latest data, the average sperm count in Indian males is around 20 million per ml, therefore if your sperm count is above or around this number then the chances of conception are higher. Regular semen analysis tests can help to measure and track your sperm count, in case you and your spouse are facing difficulties in conception.
Regular Sex Can Be Good For Conception
Contrary to popular belief, a man’s sperm count does not decrease if he indulges in regular sex. This myth is the reason why many couples do not have intercourse on a frequent basis and indulge in sex only during the fertile period of the woman’s ovulation cycle. This, in fact, may reduce the chances of conception in case the date of ovulation goes off by a few days. Having sex as often as you like is not going to adversely impact your fertility, therefore enjoy your sex life to the fullest instead of worrying about preserving the sperm for the fertile days. That being said, a woman’s fertile window usually falls between the 11th day and the 17th day of the menstrual cycle and the sperms stay alive in the fallopian tubes for up to 72 hours. Therefore, having sex every 2 to 3 days during this period will improve the chances of conception but this does not mean that you restrict all intercourse to this window. Since the sperm stays alive in the tubes for 2-3 days, regular sex even outside the window can help with conception.
Lifestyle and Habits
While many men believe that sperm count inevitably decreases with age, this is actually not true. Age is just a number and what truly impacts sperm production is your lifestyle and fitness. Excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking are two habits that are notorious for decreasing the sperm count. It is recommended to consume alcohol in moderation and to quit smoking in order to improve sperm production. Also, leading a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise and a well-balanced diet, can help improve the sperm count. So pay attention to your health in order to improve your fertility.
Focussing on your health and lifestyle to increase male fertility is the best way to improve the chances of conception. If you are still facing difficulties and suspect some fertility issues then do consult a doctor for medical advice. Do not fall prey to the inaccurate tips for male fertility that are doing the rounds and double check all information with an expert before implementing any advice.
